7. Social Networks
One of the ways that you can promote your online business, without having to spend a penny is using online social networking websites.  A large number of internet users, in fact millions of them, belong to at least one social networking website.

Social networking is defined as the grouping of individuals together into to specific groups, often like a small community or a neighborhood. Although social networking is possible in person, especially in schools or in the workplace, it has become exceedingly popular online.  These websites are known as social networking websites and one of the most popular is Facebook.

Social networking websites are, in a way, like an online community of internet users. Depending on the social networking website in question, many of these online community members share a common bond, whether that bond is hobbies, religion, or politics.  Once you are granted access to a social networking website you can begin to socialize.  This socialization may include reading the profiles or profile pages of other members or even contacting them.

Social networking can also be used for businesses.  In fact, that was originally how social networking got started. If you don’t use social media, you risk seeing your businesses lose market share to other more savvy companies.

Almost 11% of UK Internet visits are to Social Media sites such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.

Over half of all visits to social networking sites are to Facebook which has over 24 million active Facebook users in the UK alone and over 400 million worldwide.  YouTube is in second with over 17% of visits and is now the second largest search engine in the world.

Facebook has now overtaken Google in terms of market share – if you don’t have a presence on Facebook how can you be found online?

Whilst Twitter only accounts for about 2% of visits to social networking sites, the immediacy of interaction means it plays a pivotal role in research and providing feedback on market offerings.  Some companies who have engaged fully with twitter have reported spectacular successes. For example, Gary Vaynerchuck who now has over 851,000 twitter followers reportedly grew his family wine business from $4 million to $50 million through the use of social media.

If you are looking to join a social media site such as Facebook, to gain access to millions of potential new customers you will need to create your own business profile page. However, you do need to be careful when making your online webpage or profile as one thing that internet users hate is being solicited for business. This does not mean that you cannot use social networking to your advantage; it just means that you need to be careful with how you do it.   Some subtlety is called for to effectively use social media.

6. Affiliate Marketing Programmes
Affiliate marketing is a revenue sharing arrangement between a merchant and an affiliate who gets paid for referring or promoting the merchants’ products and services. It is a proven cost-efficient means of getting sales using other people’s networks as it provides opportunities to advertise products to a larger market.  The more affiliate you have, the more sales you can expect and by getting affiliates to market your products and services, you can save time, effort and money in looking for possible markets and customers.  There is however some work to do to provide the affiliate structure and develop a payment system and advertising collateral for the affiliates to use.

The affiliate marketer benefits from each customer who clicks on the link in his website and who actually purchases the product by getting a commission on each sale, which can be fixed percentage or fixed amount. When a customer purchases your product, they may recommend it to others who are looking for the same item or may purchase from you again.

Affiliate marketing does involve some work to setup as affiliates need branding materials in order to promote your products.  You will also need to setup a payment system to pay affiliates their commissions.

The most important and indispensable tool in Affiliate Marketing is your own website so you need to building a good, credible and professional looking website. Your website if your sales channel to cyberspace and the central part of your Internet marketing efforts.  Your website must be user-friendly and it must be easy to navigate which will encourage your prospects to click the links to the products and services you are promoting.

5. Website Content
There is no substitute for good website content when considering ways to get traffic and your overall internet marketing strategy

Many search engines track down the keywords and keyword phrases your site uses and how they are used.  It is not a requirement that content should be done by a professional content writer.  You could do your own but you have to make content for your site that is entertaining as well as informational.  The SEO aspect of your content should also be considered as Google loves blogs!

Generally, internet users use search engines to find what they are looking for. Search engines in return use the volume of people searching for a particular keyword in prioritising their search results. With the right keywords, you could get high rankings in search engine results and get free traffic without the cost of PPC.

Having a blog is a great way to keep website content fresh and help to get good search engine rankings as long as the right keywords are considered.  If you need help setting up a blog or working out what keywords might be best for you, give us a call.

4. Article Marketing
Don’t think that article marketing is dead and gone! Article writing and distribution done properly can bring traffic into your site for years.

Make sure you write quality original articles that pique the attention of people that have interest in your product.  You could write articles that will provide tips and guides to your customers and you may be able to reuse some ideas from your existing blog. Writing articles that provide knowledge to other people can  provide the necessary mileage your traffic flow need but they have to add value to your readers.  Write articles that are themed along with the target niche of your site and make sure you use your keywords appropriately so they occur naturally in your article.

When people find your articles they have a good chance of following the track by finding out where the article originated. This is how articles drive traffic to your website.  Make sure that the link to your website is a page that is directly related to the topic of your article.  Do not send readers to a sales page as this does not usually work very well.  Include a link or a brief description of your company with the article and there’s a great probability that they will go to your site.  This is usually done by a careful worded “Resource Box” where you are allowed to put links to your site.  Write a little about yourself and your site. If you provide a light, information-laden and interesting article, they will go to your site for more.

Many article sites offer free submission and posting of your articles so distribution isn’t a problem, it is just time consuming.  We can provide that service for you if required.  There are also many other  e-zines and online encyclopedias in the Internet which provides free space for articles to be submitted.  Freelance writers can write for you for a small fee, but there is no real substitute to writing those articles yourself as you know your product the best.
